Jinbei TD-180 Deep Focus Umbrella 180 cm with Zoom Focus System
The Jinbei TD-180 Deep Focus Umbrella 180cm is a softbox with a light characteristic that delivers soft light for fashion, beauty, glamour, and portrait photography. Unlike other softboxes, it provides even more direct light with higher contrast and harder shadows on the subject.
The built-in Zoom Focus System allows you to use your umbrella much more flexibly. Using the focus rod, you can continuously move your light source within the light modifier. The light cone reflected inside the umbrella is thus reflected at different angles, illuminating your subject with even, focused light that produces rather harder shadows. However, the hardness can be varied by moving the light source.
A major advantage of this design is that the light does not show the point light source as with a typical softbox setup, but is completely evenly reflected. This works especially well with parabolic deep softboxes, which have greater depth at the same diameter compared to standard softboxes.
The Deep Focus Umbrella is equipped with the Bowens S-type bayonet via the focus rod and is suitable for many battery/studio flash units or LED continuous lights with the appropriate mount. With its click mechanism for the rods, the light modifier can be easily and quickly set up and is ready to use immediately in the studio or on location. To do this, you extend the rods until they click into place and mount the umbrella on the light source – done! It works easiest if you extend opposite rods one after the other. The umbrella can be just as easily disassembled: you slightly lift the individual rods at the speedring base, press the corresponding button, and then release the rod.
Variable lighting possible with the Zoom Focus System
You can vary the hardness of the light, meaning the hardness of the shadows on your subject, by moving the light source by up to 40 cm. Pushing the flash further into the umbrella results in a more focused and narrower beam angle of the reflected light, making the shadows harder. Pulling the flash further out of the umbrella increases the beam angle of the light and softens the shadows. The scale on the focus rod helps you reproduce the lighting settings without deviation.
You can easily tighten the focus rod securely with a screw lock. One end of the rod has the Bowens flash head speedring, where the light source, e.g., a studio flash or an LED continuous light, can be easily mounted via the Bowens S-type bayonet. The holder of the focus rod is firmly attached to the speedring base of the umbrella and completes the illuminated, reflective inner surface of the light modifier. The holder of the focus rod also has a tilt function, allowing you to angle the umbrella further up or down as desired.
At the other end of the focus rod is a hook to hang the included sand counterweight. This prevents your light modifier along with the light source from becoming unbalanced when you slide the light source out of the umbrella. The Zoom Focus System includes a spigot adapter to mount it on all common light stands.
Flexible light shaping
The Jinbei Deep Focus Umbrella gives you more options for shaping your light. The included front diffuser scatters the light reflected by the silver inner coating and creates soft shadow transitions for even illumination.
The 18-sided construction also results in an almost round softbox shape, which is noticeable in more natural-looking, round catchlights in a model’s eyes.
Stable, robust, and versatile for everyday use
The Deep Focus Umbrella impresses with its stable and robust umbrella construction. The metal rods that stretch the fabric sit in pockets on the umbrella and are fixed to the speedring base. The holder for the Zoom Focus System is also built into this base.
There is an opening with a Velcro closure in the umbrella through which you can run the cables of the light source so they don’t hang in the way or affect the light.
For protection when not in use or for transport to off-site shoots, store the light modifier along with accessories in the included carrying bag.
.
Notes on the Zoom Focus System:
Ensure a stable setup and use a sturdy light stand, preferably one with wheels, if you want to move the light source. The construction is less stable than a setup where the light source sits on the light stand and the light modifier is directly on the light source, as here the light source floats freely.
Only insert the light source into the Zoom Focus System if you are actually using it, as otherwise the weight could deform the flash head holder over time.
